Omega Speed Master, a watch out of orbit

In the world of watches, comparisons and trying to outperform the competition is an everyday story, however, few can boast what the Omega SpeedMaster achieved as one of the greatest milestones in its history, making it probably the most famous watch in the world and beyond.

It was on July 20, 1969, when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first to walk on the lunar surface, the first of them wearing a watch on their wrist, this being the Omega SpeedMaster Professional or Moonwatch, however, the prestige and magnificence of this watchmaking house began a few years ago.

The start of the SpeedMaster line

It was in 1957 when the Speed Master line was presented to the world a triple presentation was made, as this model was accompanied by the Omega Railmaster and the Omega Seamaster, the Speed being the most prominent, with its sports chronograph, emulating cars Italian sports cars from the 50s.

One of the characteristics of this model is its curves, a black dial, and the amplitude of its arrow needles, all its pieces emulate shapes that are undoubtedly designed with the ideal aerodynamics to break the wind at high speed.

The SpeedMaster model was the world's first wristwatch with a scale chronograph, designed for the comfort of race car drivers, this first model in the Speed Master line was manufactured for two years, from 1957 to 1959 Therefore, having a piece of this model today is considered an invaluable gem for collectors.

A watch outside the confines of Earth

Before making his first trip to the moon, the SpeedMaster traveled to space on the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission, in October 1962, as it was the model carried by astronauts Walter Schirra and Gordon Cooper, who bought it months before that same year.

The space climax was achieved with the Apollo 11 mission, the crew that mission that reached the moon were Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, the first two, who did step on the lunar surface carried the Professional 105.012 model, while Collins wore the Speed Master 145.012, thus initiating a historical legacy for the Omega watchmaker.

The current models retain many of the characteristics of the models used in Apollo 11, making the Moonwatch version one of the most sought after by collectors, currently hovering around a value of USD $5,000.

A bold timepiece design

In addition to the historical legacy, the design of the Speed Master is iconic, it has a black dial and white hands, which generates a perfect contrast that offers great readability when looking at the time, without a doubt its design perfectly balances the quality, the style, and practicality.

Practically since its creation, the Speed Master has not undergone major changes, as its design has remained in the public's taste for several decades, it was not until 2014, when some changes were made, by adding a magnifying glass, two additional straps, and the tools to change them, depending on the occasion.

It was in 2017 when Omega celebrated 60 decades of the Omega Speed Master, presenting a special edition, the Omega Speedmaster Professional Silver Snoopy Limited Edition, the latter with an average cost of USD $6,000. In short, the Omega Speed Master cannot be missing from a collection worth showing off.
