Patek Philippe History

Patek Philippe, a brand that started its legacy in 1839, in Geneva, at the hand of Antoni Patek, who began making pocket watches.

In the beginning, Patek worked with his Polish colleague Franciszek Czapek, however, they separated in 1844, and in 1845 Patek joined with the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, thus in 1851, the Patek Philippe & Co. brand was born.

Although they began in 1851, the golden year was 1868, when they made their first wristwatch, and from there great innovations emerged, such as the perpetual calendar, the chronograph, and the minute repeater, manufacturing their first machinery in quartz finishes and creating the digital format in its iconic model Ref. 3414.

Without a doubt, the prestige of Patek Philippe is unmatched, so much so that one of the simplest models of this watchmaking house is at the same time one of the most desired by collectors, which is why there is a waiting list of up to eight years to get hold of a Nautilus.

A watch with a lot of fame

It is a fact that reality and fiction often intersect, and in the case of Patek Philippe, its models have made stellar appearances in the film mecca, such as the case of the Calatrava, which is used by Ryan Gosling in his film most violent and winner at Cannes for best director: Drive.

And it is that beyond the cinema, among the holders of a Patek Philippe we find the names of Queen Victoria of England, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Tolstoi, or Richard Warner. If we travel to the present time, we can find a Patek Philippe on the wrist of one of the most powerful presidents in the world: Vladimir Putin.

Christine Lagarde, former French finance minister, former director of the International Monetary Fund, and current president of the European Central Bank, shares the likes of the Russian president's watches.

The historic auction

And it is that good taste is not a coincidence, because the watchmaking house of Patek Philippe broke a record in 2019, unseating a heavyweight in the world of time, as it achieved the highest sale in an auction, reaching 28 million euros with its Grandmaster Chime 47mm model, becoming the most expensive watch in history and thus leaving Rolex on the road.

This model was manufactured exclusively for the Only Watch auction, and it is worth mentioning that Patek Philippe only calls his most complicated works Grandmaster, this watch being the most complex of the watchmaker's house.

This timepiece includes 20 unique pieces with two clocks inside a box, one on the front and one on the back, accompanied by a large and a small bell, a minute repeater, an instant permanent calendar with a four-digit display. To this is added a second-time zone, a device that indicates day and night, in addition to the date per month, the leap year cycle, and the year display box of digits and subdial of 24 hours and minutes, without a doubt, a handcrafted piece, and after the auction, also historical.

There is no doubt that if you want to aim for a watch with history, elegance, and in the elite of the market, you should set your sights on a Patek Philippe.
